2013 - 2014 Leadership Sessions
HUDSON: September 23 and November 18
"Junior Leadership Hudson’s first and third meetings took place in Hudson. We participated in a walking tour of Hudson, and we learned about city government through leaders like our mayor, Bill Currin. One of my favorite activities that we did in Hudson was listening to a Career Panel. Owners of Hershey’s, Great Clips, and Nicky Nicole spoke to us about creating their own businesses. Each of these owners told an admirable journey of their pathway to success. While in the Hudson library, members of Hudson Job Search taught JLH students how to improve
interviewing skills and techniques. They composed individual interviews in small groups, and we received feedback from both our peers and professionals. Thanks to Hudson Job Search, members of JLH have built confidence in applying and interviewing for jobs."

Junior Leadership Hudson met in the Hudson Library to learn about interviewing from Hudson Job Search. Hudson Job Search is a company that prepares and helps its clients find work. They gave a presentation on the importance of interviewing, how to prepare for an interview, and the dos and don’ts of an interview. For example, it is helpful to provide a “PAR” when answering interview questions. A PAR, problem-action-result, shows your potential employer how you took an issue and resolved it. After the overview, JLH students broke up in small groups for mock interviews with the Hudson Job Search panel. There, each student showed their resume and interviewed for an imaginary job. Each student received personal feedback on what he or she did well and what he or she needs to work on. After, the group gathered to share experiences and take-aways from the mock interviews. Many found that they needed to be more cautious of their body language, clearer in their responses, and better at providing relevant information. Overall, the students enjoyed learning about the process of getting a job. They believed that it would be extremely beneficial in the future, as everyone needs to know how to communicate on a professional level.
CLEVELAND: October 28
"Junior Leadership Hudson has provided students with wonderful opportunities to explore leadership in businesses around Ohio. One of my favorite leaders to hear speak was the manager of visiting teams for the Cleveland Indians. He taught us the importance of working hard throughout one’s career, and he explained how strong dedication leads to success. While in Cleveland, we also visited Sherwin-Williams. We learned what each member considered the most important aspect of leadership, and we discussed Sherwin-William’s global achievements. JLH learned interesting facts such as every year there is an international conference to discuss the next year’s “hot colors.” Additionally, our trip to Key Bank introduced us to technology’s role in business, stock markets, and currency value."

AKRON AND KENT: December 9
"We took the JLH bus to downtown Akron for this session, where we met with up and coming businesses at the Akron Business Accelerator, which was a business incubator focused on science and technology. Meeting with the businessmen and women helped us learn entrepreneurial skills, as well as it educated us on the science and technology fields. We had an especially good lunch that day at Laziza in downtown Kent. Finally, we met with a group called BlackStone at Kent State University. The woman we talked with educated us on more entrepreneurial skills, as well as talked about how 3-D printers were contributing to the students’ success."
AKRON: January 24
"Probably my favorite session overall, we learned about the court system in the morning; we talked to Summit County Prosecutor, Sherri Bevan Walsh, and she discussed what her job entailed and her background. She also introduced us to Avery, the office dog, who helps children cope when talking to the lawyers about terrible experiences they were victims of. Later, we met with Judge Teodosio at the Summit County Courthouse, where he discussed how his job operated. He talked about some of the most interesting court cases he has been a part of, as well as his background. I was especially interested since I’m on the mock trial team. After a fantastic lunch at Bricco in downtown Akron, we made our way to the Austen Bio Innovation Institute, where we toured the state-of-the-art mock hospital, which acts as a practice ground for medical students."

COLUMBUS: February 26
"The Columbus trip, which I would consider to be our signature event, was a blast. We got to observe a case being held in the Ohio Supreme Court. After that, we enjoyed a guided tour through the Ohio Statehouse. The history and architecture of the building was fascinating; all of the ceilings were incredibly ornate and our fantastic guide was very informative and knowledgeable. Also at the statehouse, we had a question-answer session with our representatives, who were especially nice to me, since politics is something I foresee in my future. Finally, we got to talk to a representative from “Jobs Ohio”, an up and coming organization focused on advertising the great things Ohio has to offer in order to bring businesses back to the Buckeye State."

CLEVELAND: April 14
"The Cleveland trip was extremely fascinating. JLH, for the first time, had the opportunity to take a behind the scenes tour of Playhouse Square. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable, and it was super interesting to explore the history and architecture of one of Cleveland's greatest landmarks. After lunch, we traveled onward to the Cleveland Clinic. There, we learned about the research the hospital was undergoing in pursuit of a cure for breast cancer. Despite my typical lack of interest in the medical field, this presentation moved me because of the experience my relatives have had with breast cancer. After that, we walked around the hospital, looking at 3D printers, robotic engineering, and biology. We finally had to say goodbye, and boarded the bus home after a fantastic culture and scientific experience.
